This is a slide deck I made for a recording homework assignment in April 2024 called, “Tarea 5 (audiovisual) – Un lugar hispanohablante.” For this assignment, I had to make a short video with a narration about a Spanish-speaking country that I would like to go to. I made the video about a theoretical study abroad in Spain, and talked about three cities I would visit while in Spain. The sides of the presentation, as well as the script I had written, are below.

What is interesting about this project and why I chose to include it in my presentation is that just about a year after this presentation was made, I did a study abroad in Spain for a month. In the month-long study abroad, just by chance, I stayed in Madrid and did two day trips, one to Barcelona and one to Sevilla. These are the three cities that I had listed as places I would visit in the presentation.

For Madrid, I had said that I wanted to visit The Prado and the Reina Sofia. Since the study abroad that I had gone on was to take an art history class, I spent a few days in each The Prado and the Reina Sofia. I had assignments to look at several pieces of art of my choosing at each of these museums. One assignment that I did was of Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Paul the Hermit, painted by Diego Veláquez which is housed in The Prado.

In Barcelona, I was only there for one day, but I was able to see the Sagrada Familia like in my presentation. Unfortunately, I was not able to go to the beach as I had said I wanted to. My trip to Barcelona was planned at the last minute. I had gotten up early and decided that I wanted to go visit someone I know who was studying abroad there, so I last minute booked a three hour train. This also meant that I had not booked any tours, but I was able to spent the entire day on foot walking around the city. I saw many other attractions, but honestly, what stood out the most was the diversity of the people. The friend that I met up with is Punjabi Indian, and she said that she has met a lot of people who are Punjabi or from India during her stay, as Barcelona and really all of Europe is a common place to immigrate to from India.

In Sevilla, my time was also limited, as I only stayed one night. I tried to see the Real Alcazar, but unfortunately, on the only day I was there, they were closed. Instead, I was able to walk along the river, which was very beautiful. There was a lot of rowing that was happening on the river, and it was really cool to be able to see that, as rowing is something that I love to do. Observing the rowers made me realise how interconnected the world is.

Looking back on this presentation was a very surreal experience, as I had not actually planned on visiting these cities when I created the presentation. I had no idea that I would have the opportunity to go to these cities at all. However, looking at the concluding paragraph of my script. It seems that my criteria for choosing the cities I wanted to visit in the video were visiting places with varying culture and history, which is what I was looking for when I was in Spain. While I may not have followed the exact tourist route that I had wanted to when making this presentation, I was able to learn a lot about life and culture in Spain in various cities around the country.
